About the Rock the Bells Festival

Known for years as one of the biggest events in hip hop, the Rock the Bells festival is definitely one of, if no THE, hip hop event of the year. Each year thousands of fans look to get their hands on Rock the Bells tickets to see the best in the biz do their thing live and in person. The original Rock the Bells was centered only in California, but because of the success of the festival Rock the Bells has gone on to travel around the world, bringing the best hip hop artists in the world all over the planet.

Unfortunately for fans, the 2010 Rock the Bells tour will not travel as extensively as it has in the past, limiting the tour to four of the biggest cities in the US. But while there are less shows that means the four stops will be crazy hot. Rock the Bells history:

The first Rock the Bells was headlined by the newly-reunited Wu Tang Clan. The Rock the Bells festival was founded and is operated by Guerilla Union. At first the Rock the Bells concert was a one-time event, and it wasn’t till the the 2006 Rock the Bell that the act was converted to a traveling tour. The Rock the Bells tour has seen some of the best and most influential hip hop artists of all time, and this year is no different.

July 17, 2004 – Wu-Tang Clan, Redman, Dilated Peoples, Sage Francis, Supernatural, Chali 2na & DJ Nu-Mark of Jurassic 5, Eyedea & Abilities, Fantastik 4our.

November 13, 2004 – A Tribe Called Quest, Xzibit, Cypress Hill, Jurassic 5 – Special Guest, Jaylib, Little Brother, Supernatural, The CMA, Crown City Rockers, Self Scientific.

The 2006 Rock the Bell club tour went from November 21 – December 22 and went all over thr country featuring – Redman, Raekwon, Keith Murray, Supernatural, EPMD, Ghostface Killah, Pharoahe Monch, Smif-N-Wessun, Dirty Heads, DJ Kool.

In 2007 the Rock the Bell once again went on tour, traveling from July 26 – Septemebr 1 in Honolulu, Hawaii. The main stage featured Rage Against the Machine, Wu-Tang Clan, Cypress Hill, The Roots, Public Enemy, Erykah Badu, Rakim, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Nas, Black Star, EPMD, Pharoahe Monch, Immortal Technique, Jedi Mind Tricks, David Banner, Supernatural, Rahzel, Murs 3:16. And the “Paid Dues Independent Hip Hop Stage had MF DOOM, Living Legends, Felt, Sage Francis, Murs 3:16, Brother Ali, Cage, Mr. Lif, The Grouch & Eligh, Hangar 18, Blueprint, Lucky I Am, The Coup, Blackalicious, Ice Water Inc., Sen Dog from Cypress Hill, Hieroglyphics.

The 2008 Rock the Bells Festival Series once again went all over and brought huge artists to venues all over the country. Artists participating in the 2008 series, which ran from July 19 – September 6, included A Tribe Called Quest, The Pharcyde- Special Guests, Nas, Ghostface and Raekwon, MF Doom, Rakim, Mos Def, De La Soul, Method Man & Redman, Immortal Technique, Dead Prez, MURS, Blue Scholars, Sage Francis, Little Brother, Jedi Mind Tricks. And the “Bigbox Culture Club Stage” had: Spank Rock/Amanda Blank, The Cool Kids, Kidz in the Hall, DJ Afrika Bambaataa, Flosstradamus, Wale, Santogold, Kid Sister, B.o.B., Tyga, Jay Electronica, Devlin & Darko, Ninjasonik, Blaqstarr, Pase Rock, Plastic Little, The Pack.

2008 was the first time the Rock the Bells Festival went international, bringing the tour to Prauge, Amsterdam, Stockholm, Helsinki, London and Paris. Artists on the Rock the Bells international tour included Nas, Mos Def, De la Soul, The Pharcyde, Supernatural & Scratch, Epmd.

The 2009 Rock the Bells lineup includes: Nas & Damian Marley, Ice Cube, The Roots, Cypress Hill, EPMD, Busta Rhymes, Common, Big Boi, KRS-One, House of Pain & La Coka Nostra, Reflection Eternal, Tech N9ne, K’naan, RZA, GZA, Raekwon, Sage Francis, M.O.P., Slaughterhouse, The Knux, Eyedea & Abilities, Necro, Slum Village, Evidence & The Alchemist, Chali 2na, Psycho Realm, Mystic Journeymen, Buckshot,Mickey Factz, B. Dolan, and Tabi Bonney, Hosted by KRS-One, Supernatural, MURS, Pete Rock, and a joint set from all artists that includes covers of some of the biggest hits from the 80’s.
